How shocked would you be if I told you that a public school district in Denver is ramped up and ready to introduce a new woke policy? Probably not that shocked. Denver Public Schools (DPS) is the first school district in our great nation to adopt a policy that would allow non-English-speaking students to receive education in their native tongues. Not so cleverly enough, they have coined the policy "language justice."
A draft document of the policy states that "language justice" is "the notion of respecting every individual's fundamental language rights - to be able to communicate, understand, and be understood in the language which they prefer and feel most articulate and powerful." Further, the draft reads, "DPS will be a district that is free of oppressive systems and structures rooted in racism and one which centers students and team members with a focus on racial and educational equity, enabling students to ultimately become conscientious global citizens and collaborative leaders."
The draft noted that the district has a responsibility to "achieve equity" by "remov[ing] deeply rooted systems of oppression that have historically resulted in inequitable access and distribution of opportunities and resources for those who represent marginalized identities, including but not limited to race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, language and ability."
DPS enrolled 35,000 multilingual students in 2022, who made up almost half of the student population. At almost half of the population, claims of racism could be easily refuted, considering there are many languages spoken by races that include white people.
DPS noted that the next goal is to ensure "language justice" is passed in an executive limitation.
